Mecal 2012 receives over 4,500 shorts; 1,000 more than previous festival
News
Mecal, the Barcelona International Short Film Festival, is proving to be a hit once again, as shown by the receipt of 1,000 more films for the 2012 edition than for the previous year – an increase of almost 30%. This sizeable increase in entries demonstrates the festival’s importance and places it firmly in the ‘not-to-be-missed’ category, both among Spanish and international festivals. Over 4,500 films from all around the world have been sent to the event organizers, making Mecal, once again, the top festival in Spain in terms of the number of entries received.
The festival will run from 13 to 29 Abril 2012 and will once again feature its three usual competition sections: International, Oblique and Documentaries, with more than 300 short films being screened from over 35 countries. Additionally, the fourteenth edition of the festival will be packed full of surprises, with a large number of sections running concurrently and covering a variety of genres, topics, periods and countries. These include: the Vintage-style ‘First ever’ special, which will offer filmgoers shorts in which they can see the first ever appearance of a mobile telephone, a screen kiss or a transsexual; or the following specials: End of the World, Antihero, Heavy Metal and Freak, Nerd and other human oddities. You will also be able to see a retrospective of the French director François Ozon’s short films, as well as a Swiss short film festival, from the Winterthur Festival, and the Dance Video special.
Mecal Pro also backs local film-making and presents a review of the best shorts from this year’s Spanish and Catalan Scene. In keeping with tradition, the festival will feature a guest country, which this time is Germany. Among other things programmed for this section, we are including an animation special, the best shorts from the Interfilm Berlin Festival and a selection of shorts filmed by the most outstanding German directors, including such names as Rainer Werner Flassbinder or Fatih Akin.
The Sex Special (Golden Shower) and the Horror Special, along with the classic section Womart - dedicated to the world of women – have kept their place in the programming schedule for another year. Other formats you can see this year are Video clips, Creative Publicity, including the year’s best ads, and for the little ones, Mecal will also offer a Children’s special with morning sessions.
Apart from the screenings, the festival will organize other related activities like the Battle of the Programmers and the international short films market.
